Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington State announced that the state legislature will draft a bill requiring artificial intelligence (AI) developers to establish protocols for handling user requests related to self-harm.
“It’s heartbreaking to read about young people having conversations with AI chatbots that lead to tragic outcomes involving suicide,” Governor Ferguson stated on social media.
The legislation will apply to chatbot platforms such as ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot.
Furthermore, the bill will implement measures to protect young users, including filtering sexually explicit content and employing techniques to prevent manipulation of minors, according to Governor Ferguson. These protections are aimed at safeguarding vulnerable users from harmful interactions and content.
